Week 5 - Complex Networks

Presenters for next week...

Tuesday, October 1st

Complex Networks with Tate Eskelund
Complex Networks with Kaitlyn Shelley

Thursday, October 3rd

N/A

Note: Kyle Kondas' lecture on Digital Video Production has been pushed up to Tuesday. With two presentations scheduled for Tuesday as well, I may need to push the quiz to Thursday. As for the Complex Networks quiz, don't be too bogged down by details. I will be asking more general questions, and as long as you were paying attention during Dr. Schich's talk and during Thursday's lecture, you should do fine.

In what ways can other disciplines, such as the Fine Arts, Natural Sciences, or History, interact with and have a positive impact on ATEC?  Use the comments below to post a reply.

  1. Fine arts can be used to draw things of the ATEC program or we could use dancers for motion capturing programs. ATEC can simulate or model things for Natural Science to help people better understand it. History could play a big part in video games and help us create a world that is set back in time so that we could accurately make it

  2. Fine arts can help us understand the drawing, painting, and creating aspect of ATEC, as well as dancing and acting for video production. Natural Sciences in ATEC can help us understand the meaning of our world through simulation and animation of such things as the growing-up life of a flower or bug. History can also be used in simulation and video production to help us see, hear, learn, and understand the past through the story-telling of video games for instance.

    1. This is Emily Grams, by the way.

  3. Medical students can use the simulations created by ATEC students to learn about the inner workings of the human body. These simulations would be able to show them, for example, how a cholesterol build up in the blood vessels can affect blood flow to various parts of the body. Simulations may also be used as a safe medium for medical students to practice surgery.

  4. History students could benefit from ATEC students creating animations of historical settings that no longer exist today. For instance, someone could recreate the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, and history students could explore it and get a bigger idea of how vast it was. It could also be used in a military strategy class to simulate a learning environment in which students play as Hernan Cortes and try and kidnap the Aztec leader, Montezuma.

  5. Biology and other natural sciences can help ATEC students create more accurate models of animals as well as help them create creatures with a more plausible bone structure or body type. The natural sciences could benefit from models that help them determine what extinct species may have looked like or how they moved.

  6. Dancers participating in motion-capture can watch a simplified animation of their performance to notice poor technique.

  7. History could interact with game development/design. Seeing the timeline of video games and how they have come along can be pretty interesting. You could even see how video games have played large roles in big events in history.

  8. Fine Arts students can help more with the detail of animation, modeling, and motion capturing. The technique of Fine Arts and ATEC students can create powerful and moving pieces whether it is a product for games, art, and movies.

  9. Teaching difficult to observe concepts, such as advanced physics, can be assisted by using animated shorts to show how a process happens. This teaching method is starting to catch on as well due to it's success.

  10. All of these can influence games today. Serious games could help to teach people about each of these topics. These topics can also find their way into non-serious games. We see examples of this in games like Assassin's Creed, where historical accuracy is important to the company.

  11. Fine arts is very good for ATEC. The ability to draw is something very helpful for ATEC. History and natural sciences are good also in that. Those may help with other qualities of a game such as appropriate setting and clothes and perhaps how something naturally can exist or be affected. Knowing the world and being able to use that knowledge to enhance this produced by ATEC majors is always a benefit.

  12. Fine arts can give you an idea of color theory and design principals that can be beneficial to ATEC.
