Observe people using a common product or service (but NOT filling their gas tank as that example was already used by Professor Nazir). Explain one way in which you think the user experience could be improved. Use the comments below to post a reply.
This is Emily Grams. Do-it-yourself check-outs in some stores are confusing and difficult to understand, so it may take the user some time to figure out how to check his or her products out and pay for them by card. Usually, it's because the layout of the buttons on the screen is confusing and spread out, and sometimes the user can't find the button the directions tell him or her to press. A way to improve this through interactive design is to put all the important buttons that need to be pressed together in one single column at the side of the screen, while the picture of the product being checked out shows up in the next column, and the price being added shows up in the next column.
ReplyDeleteIn countries like South Korea. There are gas stations where you pay an employee to fill the gas for you.
ReplyDeleteThe app Snapchat is really hard to navigate. Maybe it could be because I'm an old lady and I just don't know how to use technology, but maybe not. To get around the whole app you have to swipe left or right which seems pretty easy. To view a picture someone has send you, you have to hold down on the picture and if you let go the picture stays there and you can't get out to view other photos that were sent to you. You have to delete the app from your history for it go back to normal. I don't know if this is a bug in the system or what. Maybe they could change out the whole navigation of the app and instead of holding down the picture to view it and to go back to normal maybe they should just have a time limit for when the picture can be exited out and that way you don't have to hold down the picture.
ReplyDeleteIn Japan, they develop a vending machine that allow people to download any app though the vending machine. Japanese got different kind of vending machine for different product.
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice if login pages on websites would say "This password contains at least one number" like they do when you create the password. That way it can help you remember what mutation of your usual password you used for that website.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it can be difficult fitting a key into a lock. The design of the lock could be changed to have sloped grooves above and below the actual keyhole that guide the key into the lock more easily.
ReplyDeleteThey actually already have something like that. It is pretty sweet:

I think alarm clocks have the problem of people hitting the snooze button to stop the alarm and going back to sleep. This means that they re not really doing what they are supposed to do. Perhaps an alarm clock with a remote snooze button that has to be placed in another room in order to deactivate the alarm. This would force people to get up if they want to turn the alarm off.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I can think of is the self checkouts at grocery stores. People often cant use them correctly or efficiently. One big problem with them is that they are very slow. You can scan a product, and then you have to wait up to 3 seconds before it will start accepting new scans. I would like to see more advanced ones that can take products right after one another.
ReplyDeleteI would change the building and service at Garland's DMV. There are so many people in such a small place with lines that go on forever and long waiting periods. If they got a bigger building they could have more people helping the consumer to get what they need at a faster pace.
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice if instragram would give you the email you used because it doesn't tell you the email you used. i have like 7 different emails. and i use all of them. sometimes you get caught up and forget about things easily. i'm surprised i'm keeping up with those 7 emails.
ReplyDeleteI the game industry today, it really bothers me just how greedy video game companies are getting. I realize that they need to make money, but they are reaching the point where the consumer is getting pushed around. If companies put more effort into providing a pleasant experience for the user, the user would be willing to spend more money without feeling ripped off.
ReplyDeleteI'll start with these Window 8 touchscreen laptops. It would be an improvement for them to have a button or switch to turn off its touchscreen properties. So pointing at something doesn't being closing something. hah. And CD/DVD drives. I don't really understand the lack of them.
ReplyDeleteThe touch pads on laptops are placed so that your palms can bump them while typing and move your cursor around unintentionally.
